Terezin Concentration Camp

Today, we took a day trip to the Terezin concentration camp. Located about an hour from Prague, the camp served as the Nazi model for a Jewish “town” and this was the camp that they used for propaganda purposes and the one they showed Red Cross inspectors to convince them that Jews were well, happy and safe. There are no death chambers there. Instead, Jews were sent from Terezin by train to Auschwitz. Terezin was rich with children’s art, adult writers, artists and musicians. They had an orchestra and presented operas and concerts. We saw the hidden synagogue, the barracks and the museum there. We also went into the crematorium where they disposed of the remains of those who died at the camp of “natural” causes - mostly tuberculosis. What made the trip most special was that our guide was the daughter of survivors from Terezin. So, the trip became personal and real.
